Swetshops good; Liberals bad?

This pic is not fuzzy; the air around these children, where they eke out a subsistence in Cambodia, is filled with smoke.  Always.

As a good Liberal, as I am when I'm not an anarchist, I naturally deplore "Fair" Trade Agreements that allow workers with substandard working conditions and low pay to compete with United States' workers, to the detriment of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and many other areas of our country; and I naturally applaud Hussein's announced intention to renegotiate those agreements.

Nicholas
Kristoff, in his support of sweatshops in Cambodia and elsewhere, shows how shallow my thinking has been.

I'll try to do better as I learn more. Surely sweatshops are not needed in Canada. Are they desirable in Columbia? Is that proposed fair trade agreement an aid to the impoverished or is it something more sinister? Do Democrats oppose the Columbia deal on reasonable or merely partisan grounds
?

Stay tuned. . . .

wow, you have a very educational blog! I can see both sides of the coin on this issue, but still maintain that overpopulation is the biggest cause of world poverty, and the chinese were truly revolutionary in bringing in the 2children only law- that has had as much of an impact on their quality of life as providing cheap labour. personaly, I believe in culling all deadwood -capitol punishment, euthanasia, and mandatory abortions for all stupid/underage people, and furthermore, women who choose 2 remain childless should b able to sell their quota. Hey, i'm no facist- but I do look good in the uniform... I'll give u a ring as soon as i've worn out my welcome w/the family- i reckin a couple more days max.. gros bissous, kris

When I had a heart attack recently Abe asked the doc "Why". He said, "Culling". Wonderful nedside manner, that doc. "If it weren't for heart attacks, George Washington would still be alive," he said.

I asked several heart specialists about that answer but never got a better one.

But, except for a few illnesses and accidents, we can't die. Medical science can keep us alive long past any conceivable productive age. We enter a stage of infantile polymorphous sexuality, which frightens most people because we then have no control over anything. We are as babies. Me, I think I'm rather looking forward to it, provided I have kindly caretakers. My mother and Jim's maternal grandmother didn't seem to enjoy it, but giving up control -- say, spinster control -- would have been a problem for them.

Naturally, as a good antiracist, I disagree with your state-backed methods of population reduction. There is no logical reason to choose the objects of your displeasure. Why not kill all Uighurs? Or sinister left-handed people? Or Irish Catholics? Or all Catholics, for that matter, with their mad opposition t birth control.

Seems to me that the world, Gaea, taken as a whole, would benefit from the elimination of human beings entirely, except for you and me and a few others who could fit comfortably on Oahu. Certainly frogs would fare better.

As long as we are dreaming Utopian dreams, why not go all the way?
